When she first awoke, Emily couldnât figure out where the hell she was.
Her limbs were heavy and her head thumped when she tried to open her eyes. The room was dark, so it must still be the middle of the night.
Gradually, everything came back to her. Her dad dying, seeing Max kissing Leah, Connor taking her home, and she winced at the fresh stab of pain those memories brought.
The last thing she remembered was Connor helping her to bed. She had drank too much wine and then he had made her the cocktail. Thatâs right. A porn star martini. The drink that had tipped her over the edge. She had been just the wrong side of tipsy on the wine, but the cocktail must have been strong because she had vague memories of the room spinning and then of being in bed as he helped her undress.
Shit, not properly undress though. Just down to her underwear, right?
She reached beneath the duvet, expecting â no, hoping â to find she still had her bra and knickers on, maybe her T-shirt too, and letting out a tiny whimper when she realised she was naked.
He had taken off all of her clothes.
Why would he do that? She had made it clear she just wanted to be friends.
But he had kissed her again.
Her memory was patchy of getting up the stairs and into bed, but then it was a complete blank. Had she changed her mind at some point?
No, she was pretty sure sheâd blacked out after heâd kissed her.
Her head was thumping as she tried to sit up, panicked about what had happened and the fact she couldnât remember, and she had to wait a moment for the feeling of nausea to pass. She had never been drunk like this before and losing complete control had been scary.
As Emily glanced round the dark room, it occurred to her that she wasnât in the guest bedroom. She was in Connorâs bed. And as if to remind her he was there, he rolled onto his back beside her and let out a snore.
Why had he put her in his bed?
This wasnât right.
Her senses were gradually coming back and she realised her breasts were tender. And was that stickiness between her legs?
Had they had sex?
How could that happen and she not realise?
Her heart was drumming now, wondering what the hell had happened in the missing blank period of her mind.
She hadnât consented to this⦠had she?
Youâre going to enjoy this.
He had said that to her. One of the last things she remembered before blacking out.
Oh God. How had she let this happen? She had promised herself she wouldnât have much to drink, but Connor had insisted on continually topping up her glass.
And he had promised her. He had said he would look after her. That he wouldnât let her get drunk. He had lied. But then he had also promised that she could stay here as a friend, that nothing would happen between them.
How could they have had sex and she not remember?
She hadnât wanted this.
